99 Problems..

Maybe not as many as that, but it seems many people, news broadcasts and bloggers etc have a problem in even dealing with two issues concerning the same person. The current media storm relates to Assange and his diplomatic immunity while avoiding arrest and deportation to Sweden. The problem that seems to affect a lot of peoples judgement on this is that there are two unrelated topics, and agreeing with one seems to now mean you have to agree with the other.

Assange is the man behind Wikileaks, this site is seen by many, including me, as a great thing in the recent past. It has shown clearly corruption and deaths that can be tied to individuals and governments. It has raised questions about how the world is working at the moment, and on what. It has changed the way that governments will communicate that is for sure, and shown that there is no hiding place - the truth willl come out.

He is also wanted for sexual assault in Sweden.

How are these linked in peoples minds? He has done a great job, even arranging a press conference yesterday from the window of the embassy he is hiding in currently. He has convinced a lot of people that it is all a conspiracy to get him somewhere so he can be extradited to the USA. There may be grains of truth in his thoughts, but it seems like a very good way of avoiding a couple of cases of sexual offences. Which, as needs to be pointed out, he has admitted - but says it was consensual.

You and I have no way of knowing what was consensual and what wasn't, but a man who claims to fight for some form of "global justice" avoiding his own seems a touch strange to me.

Like enjoying listening to the Glitter Band music from the 70s doesn't make you a paedophile, respecting the work of Wikipedia does not mean that people involved in it are above the law.
